Finnish Lapland lies in the sub-Arctic zone of our planet. It covers an area of 98,237 square kilometres, or 29% of the land area of Finland. Kuusamo is located in southern Finnish Lapland.

A visit to Kuusamo is to experience Lapland at its best – the last true wilderness in Europe with each season offering its own specialities and unique phenomena, from the summer’s midnight sun to the dark winter twilight and mystical northern lights.

In Kuusamo you will also find pristine wilderness together with many rivers and lakes – in fact, over 4,000 of them – as well numerous hilltops more than 200 metres above sea level.

Kuusamo is also the location of the Oulanka National Park, which offers over 270 km² of untamed wilderness for a host of outdoor adventures.

Kuusamo is situated in Finnish Lapland, 800 km north of Helsinki. Kuusamo town covers 5,805 square kilometres,km², of which 14 % is covered by water. Kuusamo has a population of 18.000 people, of whom about 11,000 live in the Kuusamo town. The population density is 3.7 persons per square kilometre.

The sources of livelihood are: services 68.5%, processing industries 16.4 %, primary production 11.1 %, and others 4.0 %. The distances between Kuusamo and other Finnish cities are as follows: Helsinki 800 km, Rovaniemi 195 km, and Oulu 215km, Kajaani 245 km, Kemijärvi 145 km, and Pääjärvi (Russia) 210 km.
